I've been on this website for, what, five years? now, and it probably shouldn't surprise anyone that five years of more or less daily practice has made me a better artist than I was when I first started posting my art here. Unfortunately, that has also meant that for a while I couldn't look at some of my older works anymore without feeling shame, not that I had done them (I can still see what each one taught me, and see how it was necessary to get where I am now) but that they are still publicly visible when they are below the standard of what I would want to post on this website today. I've noticed a pattern in my art process: anytime I have a painting I'm working on that's been really difficult, frustrating and unrewarding, as soon as I take a break from it and paint an insect, that insect painting turns out really, really good! Like, frustration in other aspects of my art seems to drive improvement on the insect paintings, but so far only the insect paintings. Those must be my comfort zone.
